LESSON 16
Angel Messages from Space
Angel Messages from Space
Angels are real! These powerful ministering spirits appear all through Bible history — protecting and guiding God’s people, and sometimes punishing evil. But one of their most important missions is to reveal and explain prophecy. Did you know God has said something special through His angels to the stressed-out people of our hectic world? In Revelation 14, He reveals awesome messages for these last days, coded in the symbolism of three flying angels. So significant are these messages, Jesus won’t return until they are all fulfilled! Before studying this lesson, be sure to read Revelation 14:6–14.

1. Why are we studying Revelation? Isn’t it sealed?

Read what the Bible says: Revelation 22:10; 1:1; 1:3.

Show the lesson answer

There are several reasons. A. It never has been sealed (Revelation 22:10). B. The very name Revelation means unveiling, not sealing. C. It is Jesus’ book in a unique way — it begins with the revelation Jesus Christ received and made known (Revelation 1:1). D. It is written primarily for the people just before Jesus’ return. E. A special blessing is pronounced on those who read it and heed it (Revelation 1:3). F. It describes God’s end-time people with clarity and tells what they should be preaching (Revelation 14:6–14).

2. God commissioned His church to take the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15). How does He symbolize this sacred work in Revelation?

Read what the Bible says: Revelation 14:6,8,9.

Show the lesson answer

The word angel literally means messenger, so God uses three angels to symbolize the preaching of His three-point gospel message for the last days. The symbolism of angels reminds us that supernatural power will accompany these messages.

3. What two crucial points does Revelation 14:6 reveal about God’s message for the last days?

Read what the Bible says: Revelation 14:6; Acts 4:10–12; John 14:6.

Show the lesson answer

First, it is the everlasting gospel; second, it must be preached to every person on earth. The three angels’ messages stress the gospel, making it plain that people are saved by faith in and acceptance of Jesus Christ alone (Acts 4:10–12; John 14:6). Two of Satan’s effective counterfeits are salvation by works and salvation in sin.

4. What four distinctive points does the first angel’s message cover (Revelation 14:7)?

Show the lesson answer

A. Fear God — revere Him with love and trust (Proverbs 16:6; Ecclesiastes 12:13). B. Give glory to Him — praise, thank, and obey Him (2 Timothy 3:1,2). C. The hour of His judgment has come — everyone is accountable, and the judgment is now in session. D. Worship the Creator — this rejects all idolatry and the theory of evolution. The call to worship the One who made heaven, earth, and sea echoes the wording of the Sabbath commandment (Exodus 20:11), pointing to the seventh day as a memorial of Creation.

5. What does the second angel say about Babylon? What does the angel of Revelation 18 urge?

Read what the Bible says: Revelation 14:8; 18:1,2,4.

Show the lesson answer

The second angel declares that Babylon is fallen, and the voice from heaven urges God’s people to come out of Babylon at once so they will not be destroyed with it. Unless you know what Babylon is, you could easily end up staying in it. (Babylon is presented in detail in Lesson 20.)

6. Against what does the third angel’s message solemnly warn?

Read what the Bible says: Revelation 14:9,10.

Show the lesson answer

The third angel’s message warns people against worshiping the beast and his image and receiving his mark on the forehead or hand. The first angel commands true worship; the third tells of the tragic consequences of false worship. (Details on the beast and his mark are in Lesson 20.)

7. What four-point description does Revelation 14:12 give of God’s people who follow the three angels’ messages?

Read what the Bible says: Revelation 14:12; 1 John 3:22.

Show the lesson answer

A. They are patient and faithful to the end. B. They are saints, fully on God’s side. C. They keep God’s commandments — happily obeying His Ten Commandments, aiming to please the One they love (1 John 3:22). D. They have the faith of Jesus (or faith in Jesus) — fully following and trusting Him.

8. What happens immediately after the three angels’ messages are taught to all people?

Read what the Bible says: Revelation 14:14.

Show the lesson answer

Immediately after the three angels’ messages are taught to every person, Jesus will return in the clouds to take His people to their heavenly home. (Details on the second coming are in Lesson 8; on the 1,000 years, in Lesson 12.)

9. In 2 Peter 1:12, the apostle speaks of “present truth.” What does he mean?

Show the lesson answer

Present truth is an aspect of the everlasting gospel that has particular urgency for a certain time. Examples: Noah’s message of the Flood (2 Peter 2:5); Jonah’s message to Nineveh (Jonah 3:4); John the Baptist’s message (Matthew 3:1–3; Luke 1:17). Present truth for our day is contained in the three angels’ messages (Revelation 14:6–14), which prepare people for Jesus’ second coming.

10. Who does the Bible say will come with a present truth message before the great day of the Lord?

Read what the Bible says: Malachi 4:5.

Show the lesson answer

Elijah the prophet. There is something significant about Elijah and his message, as we shall see.

11. What did Elijah do that caused the Lord to focus on him?

Read what the Bible says: 1 Kings 18:21,22,37,39.

Show the lesson answer

Elijah urged the people to decide whom they would serve (1 Kings 18:21). The nation was almost wholly idolatrous: one prophet of God and 450 prophets of Baal (verse 22). Elijah proposed that the true God reveal Himself by fire — and God sent fire from heaven, and the deeply moved people chose God (verse 39). Elijah’s message came at a time of spiritual crisis and demanded a decision.

12. The Elijah message has a twofold application. Who did Jesus say preached it to prepare people for His first advent?

Read what the Bible says: Matthew 11:11,14; Luke 1:17.

Show the lesson answer

Jesus called John the Baptist’s preaching, which prepared people for His first advent, the Elijah message (Matthew 11:11,14). John went in the spirit and power of Elijah (Luke 1:17), making truth clear and demanding a decision.

13. How do we know the prophecy has a second application to our time — just before the second advent?

Read what the Bible says: Malachi 4:5; Joel 2:31; Matthew 24:29.

Show the lesson answer

Two events must occur before the great day of the Lord (Joel 2:31): the coming of the Elijah message and the great signs in the heavens. The dark day was May 19, 1780; that same night the moon appeared as blood; and the stars fell November 13, 1833 (Matthew 24:29). So the end-time Elijah message must begin near or after 1833. The threefold message of Revelation 14:6–14 fits perfectly: it began around 1844 and is preparing people for the second coming.

14. What wonderful blessing will the preaching of the Elijah message (the three angels’ messages) bring?

Read what the Bible says: Malachi 4:5,6.

Show the lesson answer

The Elijah message — the three angels’ messages — will bring family members together in a loving, close, joyous relationship. What a blessed promise!

15. The word gospel means good news. Do the three angels’ messages provide good news?

Read what the Bible says: Revelation 14:6–14; Mark 16:15.

Show the lesson answer

Yes! Every person will have an opportunity to hear the last-day message; the devil’s plans will be revealed; heaven’s power will accompany the preaching; God’s people will be patient, will have the faith of Jesus, and out of love will keep His commandments. The major emphasis of the three angels’ messages is that salvation is provided for everyone through Jesus Christ. With Him we cannot fail; without Him we cannot succeed.

16. Are you thankful that Jesus has a special three-point message to guide and assist His people in these last days of earth’s history?

Write your answer and reflections here.

Your Questions Answered

1. Will every person on earth be reached with the three angels’ messages before Jesus returns? How is this possible with billions living?

Yes — it will happen because God promised it (Mark 16:15). Paul said the gospel in his day reached every creature under heaven (Colossians 1:23). Jonah, by God’s grace, reached the entire city of Nineveh in less than 40 days (Jonah 3:4). God will finish the work and cut it short (Romans 9:28). Count on it — it will happen very quickly!

2. Did Moses and Elijah actually appear with Jesus at the transfiguration (Matthew 17:3), or was it only a vision?

The event was literal. Moses was raised from the dead and taken to heaven (Jude 1:9), and Elijah was translated without seeing death (2 Kings 2:1,11,12). These two men came to encourage Jesus — they represent all who will be taken into His kingdom without dying (like Elijah) and raised from the grave (like Moses).

3. Why did John the Baptist say he was not Elijah (John 1:21) when Jesus said he was (Matthew 11:14)?

The answer is in Luke 1:17: John was to go in the spirit and power of Elijah. When Jesus called John Elijah, He meant that John’s life, spirit, power, and work were like Elijah’s. The emphasis is on the message, not the man. John was not Elijah in person, but he presented the Elijah message.

4. Is it possible to preach Jesus’ full end-time truth without including the three angels’ messages?

No. In Revelation, Jesus Himself reveals His end-time message (Revelation 1:1) and says His people must keep following what is revealed in the book (Revelation 1:3; 22:7). Jesus calls these messages the everlasting gospel (Revelation 14:6) and says they must reach every person before He returns. No one is truly preaching Jesus’ everlasting gospel who omits the three angels’ messages.

5. Luke 1:17 says the Elijah message was to turn the disobedient to the wisdom of the just. What does this mean?

Scripture teaches that the just live by faith (Romans 1:17). The just have the wisdom to rest their salvation on faith in the Savior. There is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). A faith anchored to anything other than Jesus Christ can never save from sin. This is the very heart of God’s three-point Elijah message for us today.
