LESSON 24
Does God Inspire Astrologers and Psychics?
Does God Inspire Astrologers and Psychics?
If some self-proclaimed prophet suddenly arose and began drawing crowds with stirring messages — healing the sick, raising the dead, bringing fire down from heaven, and revealing your personal secrets — would you believe him or her? And should you? Your eternal destiny might be tied directly to your ability to distinguish true prophets from false ones. So it is very important to know what the Bible really says about this subject!

1. Does the Bible teach that there will be true prophets in the last days?

Read what the Bible says: Acts 2:17; Joel 2:28–32.

Show the lesson answer

Yes. Both men and women will prophesy in the last days (Joel 2:28–32).

2. At His ascension Jesus placed the gift of prophets in the church, along with four other gifts. Why?

Read what the Bible says: Ephesians 4:7–12.

Show the lesson answer

Jesus gave all five gifts — apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers — for the equipping of the saints, for the work of ministry (Ephesians 4:12). The equipping of God’s end-time church is not possible if any of these gifts is missing.

3. In Bible times, was the gift of prophecy limited to men?

Show the lesson answer

No. Besides many men who had the gift of prophecy, God also gave it to at least eight women: Anna (Luke 2:36–38), Miriam (Exodus 15:20), Deborah (Judges 4:4), Huldah (2 Kings 22:14), and the four daughters of Philip the evangelist (Acts 21:8,9).

4. How long were these gifts to remain in God’s church?

Read what the Bible says: Ephesians 4:13.

Show the lesson answer

They will remain until God’s people come to the unity of the faith and become mature Christians (Ephesians 4:13) — that is, until the end of time.

5. From what source do true prophets get their information?

Read what the Bible says: 2 Peter 1:21.

Show the lesson answer

Prophets do not express their own private opinions in spiritual matters. Their thoughts come from Jesus through the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21).

6. God speaks to prophets in three ways. What are they?

Read what the Bible says: Numbers 12:6,8.

Show the lesson answer

Through visions, dreams, or face to face (Numbers 12:6,8).

7. What are the physical evidences of a true prophet in vision?

Show the lesson answer

Notice six points: A. Initially loses physical strength (Daniel 10:8). B. May later receive supernatural strength (Daniel 10:18,19). C. No breath in the body (Daniel 10:17). D. Able to speak (Daniel 10:16). E. Not aware of earthly surroundings (Daniel 10:5–8; 2 Corinthians 12:2–4). F. Eyes are open (Numbers 24:4). Not all of these appear together at once.

8. Is the working of great miracles proof that a prophet is from God?

Show the lesson answer

No. The devil and his emissaries can also work miracles (Revelation 16:14). Miracles prove only one thing — supernatural power. But such power comes from both God and Satan (Deuteronomy 13:1–5; Revelation 13:13,14).

9. Of what end-time danger does Jesus warn us?

Read what the Bible says: Matthew 24:24.

Show the lesson answer

God warns of false christs and false prophets who will be so convincing that they will deceive all except God’s very elect (Matthew 24:24). Billions will be deceived and lost.

10. How can I tell whether a prophet is true or false?

Read what the Bible says: Isaiah 8:20.

Show the lesson answer

Test their teaching and conduct by God’s Word — the Bible. If they teach and behave contrary to Scripture, they are false prophets and there is no light in them (Isaiah 8:20).

11. Are certain types of false prophets specifically named and condemned in the Bible?

Read what the Bible says: Deuteronomy 18:10–12; Revelation 21:8; 16:13,14; 22:14,15; Galatians 5:19–21.

Show the lesson answer

Yes. Deuteronomy 18:10–12 and Revelation 21:8 speak against soothsayers, astrologers, sorcerers, those who contact the dead, mediums, fortune tellers, and witches. Most claim contact with the spirits of the dead. But the Bible plainly says the dead cannot be contacted (see Lesson 10); the supposed “spirits of the dead” are evil angels, devils (Revelation 16:13,14). Crystal balls, palm reading, astrology, and talking with “spirits” are an abomination (Deuteronomy 18:12), and those who continue in them will be shut out of God’s kingdom (Galatians 5:19–21; Revelation 21:8; 22:14,15).

12. Is a true prophet’s work primarily to serve the church or unbelievers?

Read what the Bible says: 1 Corinthians 14:22.

Show the lesson answer

The Bible is clear: although a prophet’s message may sometimes edify outsiders, the primary purpose of prophecy is to serve the church (1 Corinthians 14:22).

13. Does God’s end-time church have the gift of prophecy?

Read what the Bible says: Revelation 12:17; 14:6–14.

Show the lesson answer

In Lesson 23 we saw that Jesus gives six identifying marks of His end-time church, one of which is the gift of prophecy. So God’s remnant must have a prophet.

14. When you join God’s church, which has all the gifts, how will it affect you?

Read what the Bible says: Ephesians 4:14.

Show the lesson answer

It will anchor you spiritually. You will no longer be tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine (Ephesians 4:14).

15. Paul likens the gifts to parts of the body. Which part best represents the gift of prophecy?

Read what the Bible says: 1 Corinthians 12:1–18; 1 Samuel 9:9.

Show the lesson answer

Since a prophet is sometimes called a seer (one who sees into the future), the eyes best represent the gift of prophecy (1 Samuel 9:9).

16. If prophecy is the eyes of the church, what condition would a church without it be in?

Read what the Bible says: Matthew 15:14.

Show the lesson answer

It would be blind. Jesus pointed to the danger, warning that if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch (Matthew 15:14).

17. Must God’s remnant church have all the gifts Christ gave?

Read what the Bible says: 1 Corinthians 1:5–8.

Show the lesson answer

Yes. Scripture plainly teaches that God’s end-time church will come short in no gift, which means it must have all the gifts, including the gift of prophecy (1 Corinthians 1:5–8).

18. The remnant will have the testimony of Jesus, which is the spirit of prophecy. Does this mean it will have a prophet?

Read what the Bible says: Revelation 12:17; 19:10; 22:9.

Show the lesson answer

Yes. An angel told John (Revelation 19:10) that he was his fellow servant who has the testimony of Jesus. The same angel repeated this in Revelation 22:9, calling himself a prophet. So having the testimony of Jesus and being a prophet mean the same thing.

19. What other special significance do the words “the testimony of Jesus” have?

Read what the Bible says: Revelation 1:1; Amos 3:7; Psalm 105:15.

Show the lesson answer

The testimony of Jesus means that a prophet’s words come from Jesus (Revelation 1:1; Amos 3:7). We are to regard a true prophet’s words as a special message from Jesus to us. To reproach a true prophet is extremely dangerous — it is the same as reproaching Jesus, who sends them. No wonder God warns us not to harm His prophets (Psalm 105:15).

20. What are the Bible qualifications for a true prophet?

Show the lesson answer

A. Live a godly life (Matthew 7:15–20). B. Be called to service by God (Isaiah 6:1–10; Jeremiah 1:5–10; Amos 7:14,15). C. Speak and write in harmony with the Bible (Isaiah 8:19,20). D. Predict events that come true (Deuteronomy 18:20–22). E. Have visions (Numbers 12:6).

21. Did God send a prophet to His end-time remnant church?

Read what the Bible says: Amos 3:7.

Show the lesson answer

Yes. The end-time church began to form in the early 1840s and greatly needed guidance. In harmony with the promise of Amos 3:7, God called a young woman — Ellen Harmon — to be His prophetess. She accepted the call, lived another 70 years, and died at age 87. Her aim was to point the church to the Bible as its creed and to Jesus’ gift of righteousness. She met every test of a prophet.

22. Did Ellen White have visions?

Read what the Bible says: Numbers 12:6; Joel 2:28.

Show the lesson answer

Yes, many. They lasted from a few minutes to six hours and met the Bible standard for visions (see question 7 of this lesson).

23. Are Ellen White’s words meant to be part of or an addition to the Bible?

Read what the Bible says: Revelation 14:6–14.

Show the lesson answer

No. Doctrine comes from the Bible alone. As an end-time prophet, her aim was to stress the love of Jesus and His soon return, to urge people to serve Him and accept His righteousness as a gift, and to direct attention to the Bible’s end-time prophecies — especially the three-part message of Revelation 14:6–14.

24. Did Ellen White speak in harmony with Scripture?

Read what the Bible says: Isaiah 8:20.

Show the lesson answer

Yes! Her writings are saturated with Scripture. Her stated purpose was to point people to the Bible. Her words never contradict God’s Word (Isaiah 8:20).

25. How can I accept Ellen White as a true prophet if I do not know what she wrote?

Read what the Bible says: Isaiah 8:20; 1 Thessalonians 5:20,21.

Show the lesson answer

You can’t until you read what she wrote. However, you can know that (1) the true end-time church must have a prophet, (2) Ellen White met the tests of a prophet, and (3) she did the work of a prophet. Read her writing, asking whether it draws you to Jesus and agrees with the Bible (Isaiah 8:20; 1 Thessalonians 5:20,21).

26. What three-point command does Paul give us regarding a prophet?

Read what the Bible says: 1 Thessalonians 5:20,21.

Show the lesson answer

Paul says we should not despise or tune out a prophet. Rather, we should carefully test by the Bible what the prophet says and does. If the words and conduct agree with the Bible, we should heed them (1 Thessalonians 5:20,21).

27. How does Jesus regard the rejection of a true prophet’s words and counsel?

Read what the Bible says: Luke 7:28–30; 2 Chronicles 20:20.

Show the lesson answer

Jesus counts the rejection of a true prophet as rejecting the will of God (Luke 7:28–30). He also stated that spiritual prosperity hinges upon believing His prophets (2 Chronicles 20:20).

28. Do true end-time prophets originate new doctrine, or does doctrine come strictly from the Bible?

Read what the Bible says: Revelation 22:18,19; Amos 3:7.

Show the lesson answer

True prophets do not originate doctrine (Revelation 22:18,19); the Bible is the source of all doctrine. However, they: A. reveal new facets of Bible doctrines (Amos 3:7); B. lead God’s people into a closer walk with Jesus; C. help them understand difficult portions of Scripture; D. protect them from fanaticism and deception; E. help them understand end-time prophecies; F. help them sense the nearness of Jesus’ return.

29. Are you willing to test Ellen White’s writings by Scripture and accept her counsel if it is in harmony with the Bible?

Write your answer and reflections here.

Your Questions Answered

1. What happens when a church does not have a prophet?

Scripture warns that where there is no vision from God, the people perish (Proverbs 29:18). When a church has no prophet to counsel and lead it back to Jesus and the Bible, the people will flounder (Psalm 74:9,10) and eventually perish.

2. Will additional true prophets appear before Jesus’ second coming?

Based on Joel 2:28,29, it certainly appears possible. There will also be false prophets (Matthew 7:15; 24:11,24). We must be ready to test prophets by the Bible (Isaiah 8:19,20; 2 Timothy 2:15), heeding their counsel only if genuine. God sent prophets at the right time — Moses, John the Baptist (Hosea 12:13; Mark 1:1–8) — and promised prophetic messages for the last days.

3. Why don’t most churches have the gift of prophecy today?

Lamentations 2:9 says the law is no more and her prophets find no vision from the Lord. Ezekiel 7:26, Jeremiah 26:4–6, and Proverbs 29:18 show that when God’s people openly disregard His commandments, prophets receive no vision from Him. When they begin to obey, He sends a prophet. When the remnant emerged keeping all His commandments, including the Sabbath, it was time for a prophet — and God sent one on schedule.

4. What can you do to make the gift of prophecy meaningful to you?

Study it for yourself and follow it prayerfully so Jesus can guide and prepare you for His coming. God promises to enrich in everything and confirm to the end those who eagerly wait for the Lord’s revelation (1 Corinthians 1:4–8).

5. Which gift will play a greater role in the remnant church — prophecy or tongues?

The gift of prophecy will play the leading role. In 1 Corinthians 12:28 it is listed as second in importance of all the gifts, while tongues is listed last. A church without prophecy is blind. Jesus warns of the danger of blindness and urges us to let Him anoint our eyes with heavenly eyesalve — the Holy Spirit (Revelation 3:17,18; 1 John 2:20,27).

6. If we believe the Bible and the Bible only, shouldn’t we reject modern-day prophets?

The Bible is the sole source of Christian doctrine. But the same Bible shows that the gift of prophecy will exist in the church until the end of time (Ephesians 4:11,13; Revelation 12:17; 19:10; 22:9). To reject a prophet’s counsel is to reject God’s will (Luke 7:28–30). We are commanded to test prophets and follow their counsel if they speak and live in harmony with the Bible (1 Thessalonians 5:20,21). True prophets always speak in harmony with the Bible.
